Where's Dick? |

t's
possible that by the time you read this we'll know the answer to my
question. The date is September 5th... Where is the Vice President of the United States? There are no shortages of 'photos of Mr. Bush accompanied by the head of FEMA, with Sec. of State Condi Rice and Sec. of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, in the current hurricane aftermath but I've not heard a peep from number 2; Dick Cheney. Where is he and what's he doing? Not an important enquiry, I was just interested. There is so much that needs to be said about the lack of leadership from the president and the time will come when it will all be aired, written and stated. The man who flew, immediately, from Crawford, Texas to Washington to get involved with the Terry Schiavo case, told Dianne Sawyer that he hopes no one will play politics with the disaster and its aftermath. It took him days to get his well-rested body to fly in and fly out of Louisiana. They play politics whenever it suits their cause. This morning Mr. Bush has returned to Biloxi. Good. As a result of hurricane Katrina we are witnessing just how vital it is to have a federal agency capable of dealing with natural catastrophes of this magnitude. Millions of people are being impacted and the death toll mounts. It has become obvious that FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) has been downgraded because of the ongoing paramount concerns of terrorism. It appears now that our foremost agency for dealing with natural disasters is being downgraded and very nearly dismantled by the rise of the Department of Homeland Security. This doesn't make sense. Of course this country might well be struck by major terrorist attacks and we have to be prepared for such eventualities. But we urgently need FEMA because there will obviously be earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, fires and hurricanes like Katrina and we must be as prepared as humanly possible. |
