Facts of Life

sn't it peculiar how, with every increase in the price of gasoline, the advertised price always includes 9/10ths of a penny.
Some questions, starting with the most obvious one, how do they get away with that? There are no tenths of a cent, which means that no one ever gets change. Do you believe that the pump where you fill up is accurate to one tenth of a cent? I don't. The idea may well be time-honored, but it is phony and surely does not work to the consumer's advantage. For the price- gouging suppliers of fuel it means that most will say that the price per gallon is a penny less than it actually is.
The nearest I've got from an oil company executive to my challenge came a few years back and that was, "it's like when Sears says the price is $1.99 cents,. It sounds cheaper than two dollars". Yes it does, and it is all fair, square and legal. Tender $2 and you'll get one cent back. I have never understood why they have not been challenged on the gas price issue.

A couple of personal notes. When I began in talk radio, over 40 years ago, one of the most frequently asked questions was "what will you do on radio when this talk gimmick ends." It didn't end! It certainly has changed and we all have our opinions about whether its growth has been for the better.

Locally, nationally, and internationally, it has become a powerful mix of journalism, entertainment, opinion, fact and fiction. As Michael Harrington, of "Talkers" magazine has stated, "Talk radio is one of the most accurate bellwethers of American public opinion." I look forward to being with him in Los Angeles this coming Sunday to challenge that thought or belief. Let me explain, on Sunday May 7th, for a couple of hours, starting at 2.00pm, the University of Judaism (at 15600 Mulholland Drive, Bel Air) will be staging an event hosted by Bill Moran. The panel discussion involves Michael Harrison who is the editor/publisher of Talkers Magazine, Bill Handel a highly rated morning show host on KFI radio, Doug McIntyre the morning man on KABC, Stephanie Miller with the "Progressive Talk" network, and me. I'm currently with the CBS flagship in the west, KNX.
I'm told that the auditorium is filling up rapidly, however, if you are interested in joining us just call (310) 440-1246.

Remember, the Conservatives still claim that the air waves are controlled by the Liberals. If that is so, then why would these left leaning Democrats hire so many Conservatives to run the programs? In no way is talk radio "one of the most accurate bellwethers of American public opinion". I've a feeling that the meeting on Sunday could be fun.

This Thursday at 10.00pm on ABC-TV I look forward to being a guest on Commander-in-Chief. Just a brief appearance as a BBC anchor. I do not expect that it will, in any way, influence the size of the audience! I know the family will be tuned in. C-in-C is an excellent show that deserves to stay on for another season.

More later,

Michael
