he cover of the current issue of Time magazine features Vice President Dick Cheney "under a cloud", and the story is not a happy one. For many reasons he should step down and, perhaps, move to Dubai so that he can once again take over the company that made him very rich; Halliburton. As well the world knows, Cheney has a history of heart problems. There could be no better excuse for him to leave than his health woes. According to a survey this month, in the National Journal, fully 50% of Republican insiders believed him to be a liability to the president. And you know how democrats feel about him! He is, surely, no longer an asset to the Bush administration, if he ever was. Bush still appears to be protecting his Vice President. Getting rid of the Secretary of Defense has turned out to be a positive development.
Cheney has grown ever more inflexible and brittle; cursing out journalists and critics, becoming just plain odd. What is wrong with the man? Well, the 66 year old Cheney has suffered 4 heart attacks and has had several surgeries, stent insertions, and other procedures. Just over a year ago General Brent Scowcroft, a former friend of Cheney, famously said "I've known him for 30 years. But Dick Cheney I don't know any more." Possibly, probably an accurate statement.
So if he were to step down who would the president likely select? Secretary of State Rice or presidential candidate Sen. John McCain. I know many Republicans would be delighted if the choice was Condoleezza Rice but perhaps Sen. John McCain would be a more likely choice. He's a little old at 70, but if you think about it, his health is far better than Cheney's.
