his coming Tuesday Los Angeles will likely go to work, take the kids to soccer, do the grocery shopping and all manner of mundane things - and forget to vote. It is predicted that the turnout at the polls, as the city elects a mayor, will fall below the previous low of just 4 years ago. In that election, which resulted in James Hahn replacing Richard Riordan, only 36 per cent of registered voters took the trouble. We appear to be easily bored by local politics and we certainly suffer from adult attention deficit disorder. The Oscars and all those other award shows are behind us. Admittedly most news bulletins involve the progress of the Michael Jackson (the other one's) trial. The rains dominated many a newscast and the most recent earthquake was only 2.9 on the Richter scale. We should be interested and concerned, but none of the several candidates stands out with any likelihood of winning a sufficient number of votes to avoid a runoff in May.
I'll vote, but so help me, as of this moment I am still undecided for whom.
We are the second largest city in the entire nation and we are very different. We have quite a history of apathy in local politics. Perhaps we are simply tired of politicians, having endured six statewide elections in the past three years.

Speaking of elections. Looking ahead to the run for the presidency in 2008. What if Vice President Dick Cheney decides to retire? It might well happen by design or happenstance. What if President Bush took his Secretary of State as his partner in the White House? Yes, Condi Rice. She would surely be the leading woman in the race and based on her opening salvos as this country's Sec. of State, she has made a most positive impact. She has a superb resume.
If that happened - and it is not a far-out scenario - she'd be the Republican candidate for president when George Bush returns to Texas.
If that happened - and it is not a far-out scenario - then very possibly Hillary Clinton would be the choice of the Democrats.
That would be exciting.
I'll vote for that.
Michael
