ow
difficult it is to separate desire from expectation, or hope from
prospect. In this presidential election my hope is that Mr.Bush is
defeated and that Mr.Kerry has the moving vans booked to take over
the White House. Every poll shows the race to be exceptionally close,
or as they say "within the margin of error," but if you
look closely, they nearly all have the incumbent slightly ahead of
the challenger. Despite that, I see momentum
with the Senator and the President becoming more and more shrill,
highlighting the Republican concern that they could be defeated. We
need change. The prospect of four more years of warfare and job losses,
of a nation becoming increasingly isolated from the rest of the world,
concerns many millions of us. Am I satisfied that the man from Massachusetts
has the answers to what ails us when he says "I have a plan"?
No, because he has not sufficiently outlined what his plans for ending
the war in Iraq will be, but the thought of a continued foreign policy
of "preemptive strikes" conjures up further wars, if the
Texan has another term in office and no worries about further elections.
Will it be Syria, Iran, North Korea or any number of other potential
targets? We know that it will continue to be Iraq, with no prospects
for peace or an end to the insurgency which need not have happened.
They
are using the old lines again against Sen. John Edwards; that he lacks
experience and his being an attorney. They've forgotten Dan Quayle
who Bush Senior claimed was the most ideal man for the job. In the
House and Senate most of the members are lawyers. Prediction,
(and my crystal ball is as foggy as anyone's), if W is re-elected,
it won't be long before Justice Thomas becomes the Chief Justice.
But then, remember, it was the 41st president who appointed him and
claimed, at the time, that he was the man most suited to the position! Tuesday
morning I'll be in line, with my wife in her wheelchair, waiting to
vote. Like most Californians we'll be casting our vote for Kerry/Edwards. More
later...
