few random comments: f course Sen. Kerry was mistaken when he claimed that the President of the United States had not met with the Congressional Black Caucus, always a most influential and activist group. They wanted to meet with the Chief Executive, but he didn't want to meet with them. He backed down and agreed to a face to face encounter, but only after they showed up, en masse, at the White House gate and refused to leave until the president agreed to meet with them. He met with them! still hold out the hope that the Kerry/Edwards team oust Bush/Cheney, but whoever the next president , he needs wisdom and good sense to grapple with economic problems which, despite the Bush campaign rhetoric, are growing by the day. It's to be hoped that a Kerry White House will meet the test, but judging by the evidence of the concluding four years, a second Bush administration won't . t makes interesting reading and might look strong and successful on the TV screens of the United States, however the daily pounding of the Sunni insurgent cities with artillery and air strikes only increases deep hatred of this country and our allies among Arabs generally and Iraqis in particular. It's also possible that the anticipated Iraqi constituent assembly elections in January could end up being a catastrophic failure if the United States launches a large military offensive after the U.S. presidential elections. he Sinclair Broadcasting Group ,which is one of the nation's handful of powerful television conglomerates, has a history of warping and bending the news to suit Republican causes. The company is owned by financial backers of Republican politicians including President Bush. And I thought the airwaves were publicly owned! The company has, for quite a while, compelled its stations, which reach a quarter of American households, to broadcast editorials and commentaries favorable to Mr.Bush and his policies. The SBG group has instructed its stations, which are heavily represented in Florida and Wisconsin, to broadcast a film titled "Stolen Honor", which they describe as simply news. It is simply a 45 - 50 minute attack on the career and life of Democrat presidential candidate Sen John Kerry. The film is not news, nor journalism. They claim it is an exercise in their First Amendment rights. Really? This is the self-same station group that tried to get Ted Koppel's Nightline off the air when they presented their tribute to the war dead in Iraq by listing the names ...and reading off the names of the victims. I wonder how long it will take for tv companies - the major players - before the administrations which have the power to grant licence's begin expecting favors in return. And now we are down to the final few decisive days with the debates behind us. Sen. Edwards overwhelmed and out performed Dick Cheney in the Vice Presidential debate. I wish there could have been more of such meetings. Sen.John Kerry destroyed Pres.Bush in their three encounters. With the war as the major campaign issue ,my choice of the quote of the week comes from Brent Scowcroft who was the former National Security advisor and a close friend of the senior Bush, George H.W.Bush, he recently said that they US administration's "unilateralist" stance had contributed to the decline of the transatlantic relationship". He added, with sagacity, "We might never get back to the closeness we had in the depths of the cold war because the world is a different place. But it seems to me that our fundamental differences are very, very, small". I hope he's accurate. |
