ill
there be an October surprise? Probably, with the election so close at
hand and so many forces trying to impact on the outcome of the race,
there is most likely to be some revelation, scandal, gaffe or pronouncement
that will cause the excruciatingly close race to burst wide open and
hurl either Bush or Kerry into the lead. Discounting external threats
in the form of the war in Iraq, potential battlefields elsewhere, or
God forbid, a terrorist assault here at home, it might well come in
the form of an announcement by President Bush of some members of his
cabinet for the following four years, should he win. It could be a powerful
boost to his prospects if he told us that his Attorney General was going
to return to private life to be replaced by Rudi Giuliani. How about
Sen. John McCain as Sec. of Defense, an extraordinarily popular man
to replace a most divisive Don Rumfselfd? Then,
I would presume, Sen. Kerry would be impelled to present some of his
appointments. Suggestions which might have appeal: To
the Supreme Court (because there will almost certainly be vacancies
within the next four years to the currently conservatively-weighted
highest court), a man who has rejected the idea before, former Gov.
Mario Cuomo. Secretary
of Defense, Gen. Wesley Clark, the former four star General who was
the NATO Supreme Allied Commander. Secretary
of Health and Human Services, former Governor of Vermont and M.D., Howard
Dean.
And
then ...wouldn't it be a real October surprise if the next Secretary
of State would be former President of the United States, Bill Clinton. Well
I can dream.
I
dream too of an end to the Bush preventive war doctrine which has proven
itself to be a monstrous failure. A policy which is likely to keep our
troops tied down in Iraq for many years to come with an uncertain outcome
and a steadily rising body county - theirs and ours. Formally
our leaders, Republican and Democrat, considered war as a last resort,
available to us when our vital interests were threatened or when diplomatic
efforts just didn't work. No, we don't have to wait to be attacked first,
but as time and events have shown in the case of Iraq there were no
weapons stockpiles and no operational links between Saddam Hussein and
Al Qaeda's terrorism. We
know that we are at war with Al Qaeda for good reason and we must fight
back and defeat them with all our might, but the war in Iraq was a war
of this administration's choosing, for reasons that will one day become
clearer than the records of W's National Guard service.
